Letter from Principal Richard Carosso (September 12, 2022)

Lahainaluna ‘Ohana,

I just wanted to reach out tonight to share some news and also ask for your help in ensuring we provide the best opportunities possible for our students.

First, Last Tuesday the State Deputy Superintendent, Heidi Armstrong, visited Lahainaluna. We spent the day touring our campus, and she was very impressed by all that our staff is doing to create engaging programs. Her highest praise though, was for our students. She was absolutely amazed at the respect, positivity, patience, and kindness of these kids. You should all be proud of your children, they represented Lahainaluna extremely well.

Second, our entire school community is getting excited for Homecoming this week. It’s been a while since we’ve had a traditional celebration, and staff and students are focusing on the importance of our alma mater, its connection to our history and the sense of pride and place which makes Lahainaluna so special. I am very much looking forward to experiencing Homecoming activities next week.

Lastly, and most importantly, the school is making our final push to qualify for Title 1 funds for next school year. These federal monies are critical to what we are able to provide to students. Qualifying for Title 1 is based on the percentage of students who are eligible for free and reduced lunch. To help us in this push, if you haven’t already, please go to ezmealapp.com to apply. Students who qualify can receive free or reduced lunch, as well as reductions in costs for college entrance tests, application fees, AP test fees, etc. We’re really close, and even if you don’t think you would qualify, please try. The last day is September 13, and we’d hate to miss out by being just a couple of kids short.

As I’m finishing up my seventh week here at Lahainaluna, I’d like to thank everyone for the support and kindness I’ve been shown. We naturally are always challenging ourselves to be better, and with this community, this staff, and especially these kids, I am confident we can continue to achieve great things together.

Thank you, and have a great evening,

Mr. Carosso
