Course Description

Course Objective:

Transitions to High School is a course that is designed to prepare students with the skills and strategies they need in order to succeed in high school. It will focus on literacy, research, and organization skills.

Course Goals:

  1. Exemplify a Self Directed Learner during Study Halls and by using the Student Planner
  2. Cite textual evidence to support a claim
  3. Increase reading ability to grade proficiency with i-Ready
  4. Increase typing speed to 45 words per minute
  5. Improve public speaking ability

Course Grading:

25% Classwork:

Complete all tasks, including argumentative writing, research skills, and library lessons with fidelity.

25% Study Hall:

The student starts out each Study Hall period with 10 points. They will keep the 10 points if they stay on task. For every two minutes of inactivity or tomfoolery, the student loses 1 point. They are expected to do one or more of the following three activities, homework, study, or read.

25% Planner:

Write in homework for all seven previous periods before entering the classroom. Each planner check is worth 1 point.

25% Computer Lab:

Each visit to the Computer Lab, the student will be graded out of 10 points. The student needs to do two lessons and will earn 5 points for each lesson they PASS on i-Ready in a Domain they are not at Grade Level Proficient at. If the student is Grade Level Proficient in all domains, they are then allowed to work on typing at 45 wpm for extra credit or to use the period to work on other outstanding studies.
