Grade 11: American Literature (Fall) and Expository Writing 1 (Spring)

Course Description

Naganuma: Periods 1, 2, 3 Naganuma/Irwin Periods 5, 6, 7

SEMESTER 1 (FALL): American Literature =  ½ credit

This semester course explores the traditional and contemporary literary works of the United States of America from pre-Colonial America through the present. Students will read fiction and nonfiction texts that include poetry, short stories, articles, dramas, and novels by major American authors which explore American ideals of economics, history, emotion, culture, individuality, freedom, etc.

SEMESTER 2 (SPRING): Expository Writing 1 =  ½ credit

This semester course explores exposition; it is a type of oral or written discourse that is used to explain, to describe, and to give information. This course will cover the three main types of Exposition as described by the Common Core State Standards Initiative: Argumentative, Informative/Explanatory, and Narrative Writing.
