School Resource Officer Program

The Maui Police Department implemented the High Schools SRO Program in August of 1999. It is a specialized unit of the Uniform Patrol Services Bureau of the Maui Police Department. This program provides various programs, referral Resources and information on:
-Anti- Crime
-Anti- Drug
-Anti- Violence campaigns
Along with Lahainaluna, the department partnered up with other high schools throughout Maui County:

  • Baldwin High School
  • Hana High and Elementary School
  • King Kekaulike High School
  • Lana'i High and Elementary School
  • Maui High School
  • Moloka'i High School
  • St. Anthony High School

SRO Officer Training

Officers receive training through the National Association of School Resource Officer (NASRO). They are required to attend two other training programs after NASRO. Officers attend the COPS In School training program and the Fox Valley/Office of Juvenille Justice & Delinquency Prevention (OJJPD) School Resource Officer Leadership Training.

SRO Program

SRO Officers are given specific task of working with their school as a community in itself. They assist the educational institution in providing a safer learning enviornment. They follow the "Triad" concept of the National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO):

  • Law Enforcement
  • Teaching
  • Counseling

 

SRO Officer functions

  • The Officer is a resource for students, teachers and parent and student conference on an individual basis, dealing with individual problems.
  • Officers rely on networking of various partnerships, such as:
    • Government agencies
    • Non- Profit agencies
    • Other Private agencies
